Stick to how your apartment is currently set up or move furniture to create a more open space for your guests to move through.

Party foul: Your guest list can be a key factor in hosting costume parties. It can make the evening a success or easily ruin the night. “Be emotionally intelligent about your friends and guests,” says Rachel Cannon, a theater schoolteacher by day and hostess in her spare time. While Cannon isn’t a professional apartment party planner, she may as well be. She hosts a minimum of 12 parties a year ranging from her husband’s The Office themed birthday party to her annual Friendsgiving feast. “It can look like Pinterest threw up in your apartment, but if certain guests don’t get along with one another, then that can be a problem.” She recommends understanding the relationships of your guests and taking that into account when creating a list of possible attendees.

Community courtesy: Notifying your neighbors of your celebration is key here, especially since a cavalcade of characters will be in and out of your apartment — potentially in scary or obnoxious costumes. Another thing to consider: Control the volume of your party after the clock strikes midnight — or whatever time the noise ordinance dictates in your city or community.
