Fall Cleaning Tips and Checklist: The Bedroom

With autumn swiftly approaching on September 22 and Pumpkin Spice Lattes back in the picture, now is the perfect time to spruce up and clean up your apartment for the changing season. Previously, we offered tips on how to transform you living room. Now, it’s time to focus on the bedroom.

The Bedroom

Your bedroom can be a place of solace, the one spot in your apartment where you can retreat to a restful night of sleep. However, a messy bedroom can lead to a cluttered mind. Seeing clothes scattered on the floor and a crowded nightstand can have a major impact on how well you unwind every night. Cleaning your room will help create a more renewing space and help you identify any items you may need.

Start off your cleaning process with the focal point of your room: the bed. Remove your pillow covers, bed sheets and duvets and toss them in the washing machine. You can either wait for your bedding to dry or add a fresh set of sheets to your bed. If you have a cloth head board, this will need to be vacuumed.

Now it’s time to move to your floor. Take out any rugs you may have and give them a good cycle in your washing machine. Carpets should be vacuumed thoroughly. Don’t neglect the area under your bed, which can also serve as extra storage space.

“The area under your bed is a great spot for extra storage,” says Lorraine Brock, Founder and President of Get Organized!, a certified woman-owned professional organizing company based in Richardson, Texas. “Places like The Container Store offer wheel-out storage boxes for under your bed.”

When it comes to a desk and nightstand, haphazardly throwing out items which seem to be unnecessary can often lead to regrets afterward. Brock recommends organizing your belongings into separate boxes to get a better gauge as to what needs to be thrown out and kept. “Nightstands can be a collect-all in your bedroom. By organizing all of your items first, it can better your cleaning process.”

Papers and notebooks can be put into one box, small items and décor into another box and things you know for sure can be trashed into another. After everything is separated, carefully go through each box and decide what should be kept versus thrown out.

Once you’ve fully decluttered your bedroom, you can finish up your deep clean by polishing bookcases, steaming your curtains and dusting off your ceiling fans, lamps and baseboards.

Cleaning your bedroom can provide better peace of mind and sweeter slumbers. If you’re looking to clean green, watch our video for a few additional tips.
