Moving to a new city is always exciting. Regardless of where you are moving to, you can always find something interesting to see and do just a few minutes away from your Greystar apartment. Getting to know your neighbors can be a rewarding experience and transforms your community from a place to live into a place to call home. We have put together a few tips on how to introduce yourself as well as how Greystar can help you become a part of your local community.

Meeting your neighbors and developing relationships inside your community is important. Beyond potentially developing meaningful friendships, getting to know your neighbors can make your community feel like home. Even simply knowing your neighbors’ names and a little bit about them makes a huge difference in creating warmth and goodwill. On top of that, if you are new to an area, getting to know your neighbors may provide you some recommendations of lesser known attractions, restaurants, and hotspots in your city.

Greystar offers a few ways to help you meet your neighbors. Many communities offer the ActiveBuilding® resident portal. This online tool allows you to do convenient things like submit maintenance requests, pay your rent, and update your contact information. The ActiveBuilding portal also includes a Community Wall, which is a digital space where just the residents of your community can connect with one another, share interests, and make recommendations on things to do in the area.

Here are a few more tips on how to get to know your neighbor:

  1. Be Friendly

Never underestimate the power of simply saying hello to your neighbors. When you pass each other on the way to your apartment, in the parking lot, or if you spot them in your local community, saying hello can be the icebreaker you need to open up a conversation and slowly get to know the people in your area a little bit more.

  2. Find Common Interests

Once you begin talking, mention the things that you like while listening for clues as to what the other person is interested in. Talk about a local sports team, your favorite restaurant in the area, your favorite bands, or other topics.

  3. Use Other Online Resources

There are a number of websites and apps specifically designed to help you meet people in your local area. If you decide to use an online service, always be safe and careful with your privacy.

  4. Use Common Areas

Many Greystar communities have common areas designed for socializing. Pools, BBQ areas, lounges and more are all great places to stop and say hello and get to know your neighbors. Simply making acquaintances can make a huge difference in how you feel about where you live. Take your time and enjoy getting to know your neighbors.

Greystar offers comfortable apartments across the country, but the residents are what make each of our properties a true community. Whether using our Greystar ActiveBuilding portal, attending a social event, or saying hi to one another, every friendly resident helps make our communities feel like a true home.
