At Greystar, we strive to make a big impact in all of the communities we serve. Green living is here to stay, and you can create a big impact by making small changes in your everyday life. Learn how you can live sustainably with our list of Eco-friendly living habits:

Energy Efficiency
• When possible, use windows and patio doors to increase air flow and fresh air rather than relying on air conditioning
• Make sure furniture or home decor isn’t blocking or pressed against any outlets or vents
• This fall, add on a sweater to avoid turning on the heat
• Prevent drafts by reporting any loose windows to your Leasing Professional to save on your air conditioning and heating bill

The Kitchen
• Thaw frozen foods in the refrigerator to reduce cooking time
• Avoid opening the oven door while baking to keep the temperature consistent
• Turn off the drying function of your dishwasher and leave the door open to air dry dishes
• Shop locally at farmers markets to support your local economy and cut the ecological impact of your groceries

Electronics
• Use power strips and outlet timers to conserve energy
• Unplug appliances and chargers when not in use
• Turn off your computer or laptop when it won’t be used for two or more hours
• Mitigate e-waste by properly recycling cell phones, batteries and light-bulbs with your city’s electronic waste recycling program

Lighting
• Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms
• Use natural daylight instead of overhead lights
• Lamps use less energy than overhead lights
• Use Energy Star® LED light-bulbs

Water Conservation
• Check for leaks and drips and report them to your apartment’s Leasing Professional to save clean water
• Use the kitchen sink sprayer and avoid leaving water running continuously
• Load your dishwasher to capacity to save on water, energy and detergent

Laundry
• Adjust your washer cycle to match the size of your laundry load
• Use cold water to wash clothes
• Choose biodegradable and non-toxic detergents to help your local waterways

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
• Switch to online rent and bill payments to avoid using excess paper
• Buy in bulk with reusable, non-plastic containers when possible
• Keep an Eco-kit in your car with reusable grocery bags, stainless-steel straws, glass mason jars and bamboo utensils

Health and Wellness
• Look for certified clean beauty products to prevent chemicals going into local waterways
• Go smoke- and vape-free to reduce waste and help air quality
• Choose petroleum- and paraffin-free candles to prevent harmful chemicals from going into the air
