Talent and Culture June 3, 2024

As June begins, we are celebrating LGBTQIA+ Pride Month and the power of being your authentic self. At Greystar, we understand how important it is to acknowledge the intersectional identities that our team members hold in the workplace and beyond.

Owning your story and embracing your true self can sometimes require a great deal of courage. Across our organization, we are committed to cultivating an environment where this is valued and celebrated.

Own Your Story

“Owning Your Story” refers to the ongoing journey of self-acceptance and authenticity that you can choose to share with others. The ability to share your story and be fully heard by others can feel empowering.

As we embrace our own journeys, it is important to acknowledge the history of Pride and how those who came before us have contributed to LGBTQIA+ rights. In the words of Marsha P. Johnson, "History isn't something you look back at and say it was inevitable. It happens because people make decisions that are sometimes very impulsive and of the moment, but those moments are cumulative realities.”

In Their Words

Follow along below as team members who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community share about their experiences at Greystar. Their stories highlight how our culture of inclusivity has not only welcomed them but also empowered them to thrive authentically in the workplace.

Shain Vogelsong - Program Manager - He/Him/His

“At Greystar, there is a big focus on the people we hire and the company culture each team member believes in and supports. This allows me to come to work knowing I will be respected, included, and valued. As a result, I am able to live a happy work life and be productive. Greystar's culture makes work feel like home.”

Kira Wells - Community Manager – She/Her/Hers

“When you're able to be your authentic self, it not only frees up mental space but also allows you to channel your energy into excelling at work and meeting expectations more effectively. Embracing your true self fosters confidence, creativity, and a sense of fulfillment that can positively impact all aspects of your life, including your professional endeavors. It's empowering to prioritize authenticity and see how it contributes to your success.”

Jake McKowen – Senior Analyst – He/Him/His

“Coming to Greystar was a breath of fresh air for me. People are kind, respectful, and professional. Our policies of inclusion and support for all team members set us apart from other organizations. I'm really proud to work for such an inclusive company. Knowing that I can be open and honest about myself and my relationship makes it much easier to do good work here. Not having to hide part of who I am out of a fear of retaliation or homophobia makes it easy to show up as my whole self and really put my passion into my work.”

Laura Rosero – Marketing Executive – She/Her/Hers

“I remember meeting my team on my first day at Greystar. When I introduced myself, I told them that I made TikToks with my partner about LBGTQIA+ issues. They all excitedly started talking about how interesting and entertaining each of my videos were. From then on, I knew that Greystar would be a space of inclusion where it was not necessary to hide.”

Darren Callihan – Communications & Brand Analyst – He/Him/His

“As someone who has recently started sharing their truth, it's been refreshing to realize that my teammates and friends around the office care about my life professionally and personally. Hearing others share their experiences and journeys with their loved ones has given me encouragement that people will support and value you for who you are in all aspects of life. Greystar embodies that very idea; it’s a place where you're able to grow while also being able to be yourself without worry.”

Trey Ascencio – Community Manager – He/Him/His

“Early in my time at Greystar, I encountered a challenging project that required a blend of creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration. I hesitated to voice my ideas in our team meetings, fearing they might be dismissed or overshadowed. However, Greystar’s inclusive environment proved to be transformative. By embracing diverse perspectives and creating an environment where every voice is heard, our organization empowers employees to unleash their full potential.”

Listening to our LGBTQIA+ team members at Greystar share how they have felt supported is truly inspiring. Let's continue to work together to create environments where everyone feels comfortable being themselves.
