Moving checklist
Moving to a new home is an exciting journey, whether it's just down the street or across the country. With the right plan in place, you can make the process feel smooth.
Before packing your first box, it’s important to have a moving checklist on-hand so you can keep track of what you’ve done and what you still need to do. Use this checklist to make the transition to your new home as seamless and stress-free as possible.
Follow these steps to guide you through the moving process. Please note that this checklist is not meant to be comprehensive, but rather a high-level guide to provide additional support during your move
Create a moving file
- Whether you prefer a Google document or an Excel spreadsheet, create a place to store quotes, receipts, and any other important documents associated with your move so that you can access them at a moment’s notice.
Choose location and start searching
- If you’re looking in your current neighborhood or in a country on the other side of the world, you’ll need to conduct a property search based on your specific needs.
Apply and get accepted
- Prepare your important documents and submit your rental application to the property you're interested in. Not sure what you’ll need? Check out our complete guide to rental documents for everything required to get started.
Schedule your move
- Consider the distance of your move and research moving companies to assist you. While DIY moves can work for smaller spaces like a studio apartment or dorm, tackling a larger apartment on your own can quickly become overwhelming so be sure to plan accordingly.
Take inventory
- Save time for yourself and your movers by getting rid of items that you don’t need anymore. This will make it easier when it comes time to start packing boxes and is important if you’re downsizing.
Change your address
- It can take a couple of weeks to change your address in systems, so it’s important to request an address change in advance. Make sure you notify the post office and any other relevant companies or memberships.
Clean your current home
- Next, it’s time for a final farewell scrub to avoid any additional fees. Usually, you’re responsible for leaving your home cleaner than when you moved in.
Cancel or transfer utilities
Depending on where you’re moving, you can either cancel or transfer your utilities. Before moving in, check with your new building manager about which utility providers they typically use and any specific requirements for setting up utility accounts. If there are no specific requirements, we recommend setting up your utilities at least two days before your move-in date to ensure you have electricity and water from day one in your new home.
Pay final rent
Make sure you pay your final rent for your current place and any outstanding fees you may have with your property manager.
Do a final walkthrough and return your keys
- Your property manager will most likely want to conduct a final walkthrough to review the apartment’s condition and make sure there aren’t any damages. You’ll also give them back all sets of keys you have.
Prepare for the first night
- Take a deep breath. You’re almost there. Moving day won’t be perfect, so pack an essentials box for the first night. Include items like electronics (phone, charger, computer), keys, cash or cards, toiletries, a change of clothes, pyjamas, pillows, blankets, garbage bags, a flashlight, and an emergency kit.
Moving is a big transition, so remember to enjoy the little moments—like rediscovering a favorite old sweater or planning a fresh new look for your bedroom. Embrace the excitement of this new chapter, and trust that everything will come together, even if it feels a bit overwhelming at times.
