Fort Worth is as Texas as you can get. The city, affectionately known to locals as Cowtown, calls back to the days of cowboys, when herding cattle was one of the primary industries in the area. While the city has diversified and modernized over the years, it never lost its Western style. Nowadays, Fort Worth is one of the largest cities in the state and is a popular place to live. If you’re thinking about moving to the area, Greystar has collected information from our Fort Worth team and put together a guide on what it’s like to live here.

A Real Texas Feel

As far as major cities in Texas goes, Fort Worth feels the most distinctly Texan. The Stockyards in particular exemplify that Western feel. The area hearkens back to past centuries, when cowboys herded cattle from Texas all through the Midwest and back again. The Stockyards feature a regular rodeo, cattle drive, and Wild West show. Residents also like to swing by for a few drinks or some shopping in the area. You can also enjoy dancing and great live music at the largest honky-tonk, Billy Bobs, or grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants serving up hearty and delicious Texas cuisine.

 A Taste of Texas

BBQ and Tex-Mex are favorites throughout Texas, and Fort Worth is no exception. Residents of the city love their Tex-Mex food in particular, but you can find most any type of cuisine in the city. Fort Worth also hosts a Food and Wine Festival. For the most part, residents of Fort Worth like their food like they like their living: unpretentious and laid back in all the right ways. Local favorites include iconic Tex-Mex restaurant Joe T Garcias, finger-licking good food at Heim BBQ, fantastic steaks and more at Lonesome Dove Bistro, the elegant and delicious Reata, Cattlemens steakhouse in the historic Stockyards, or classic pit barbeque at Cooper’s.

Entertainment Galore

As we have already mentioned, the Stockyards is a great place to explore, but Fort Worth has so much more going for it. The Bass Performance Hall regularly puts on fantastic performances, concerts, and plays. The Fort Worth Zoo brings in visitors from all over the area to come face to face with exotic animals from around the world. For a fun afternoon, stroll through the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, which wows visitors with dazzling displays of flora. Fort Worth is also close to the Texas Motor Speedway and AT&T Stadium. Sundance Square is home to great shopping and plenty of restaurants and events, or head to Crockett Row for even more options. Near Southside is a trendy mix-use location that is easily walkable and a pleasure to explore. If you’re not shopped out, Clearfork features 270 acres of retail and dining, and in just a short while, the River District neighborhood will be finished and promises even more things to see and do. This list would be incomplete without mentioning Billy Bob’s, a concert venue that also regularly hosts country music dancing.

Getting Around the City

Fort Worth is a driving city, and most residents use cars to get around the area. You can make use of Uber and Lyft if you do not own a car of your own. There is also the Trinity Railway Expressway (TRE) that connects Fort Worth with Downtown Dallas, opening up even more options. If you get to downtown Fort Worth, walking around is a viable option and, in fact, makes it easy to experience everything the downtown area has to offer.
