Hosting an Apartment Costume Party: Make It a Treat for All Attendees

Halloween is right around the corner! Do you have your costume yet? And, more importantly, do you know how you’re going to show it off? If you’re planning on throwing a costume party, you’re in luck.

A costume party is a completely different party animal than a TV watch party, board or card game party, dinner party or big game party. With free reign to move around and navigate your apartment space, attendees at a costume party won’t just be sitting down. They’ll be mixing, mingling and maybe even dancing.

The Costume Party

Whether it’s Halloween, a special birthday or just an excuse to have your friends and family get dressed up, a costume party is a fun way to break out of the ordinary. Creating a central theme around your party can help your guests come up with costumes – and it can make decorating a breeze. Food and entertainment can fall into themes, as well, to create a more immersive experience. Stick to how your apartment is currently set up or move furniture to create a more open space for your guests to move through.

  • Be sure to detail in the invite that it’s a costume party and what the exact theme is.
  • Create a playlist with a mix of songs both popular and in theme.
  • Feature a side table with quick and easy costume accessories in case someone doesn’t come dressed up but wants to participate.
  • Create a photo booth backdrop to take photos.

Party foul: Your guest list can be a key factor in hosting costume parties. It can make the evening a success or easily ruin the night. “Be emotionally intelligent about your friends and guests,” says Rachel Cannon, a theater schoolteacher by day and hostess in her spare time. While Cannon isn’t a professional apartment party planner, she may as well be. She hosts a minimum of 12 parties a year ranging from her husband’s The Office themed birthday party to her annual Friendsgiving feast. “It can look like Pinterest threw up in your apartment, but if certain guests don’t get along with one another, then that can be a problem.” She recommends understanding the relationships of your guests and taking that into account when creating a list of possible attendees.

Community courtesy: Notifying your neighbors of your celebration is key here, especially since a cavalcade of characters will be in and out of your apartment — potentially in scary or obnoxious costumes. Another thing to consider: Control the volume of your party after the clock strikes midnight — or whatever time the noise ordinance dictates in your city or community.
