New York City is a living legend. It’s a city that constantly reinvents itself, forever staying at the forefront of the American consciousness. So much has been written about New York City, from music to literature, and each piece contributes to the city’s near mystical status. Our Greystar team has put together this guide for tips on living in New York City. With this advice, you can enjoy living in one of the best cities in the world and help contribute to the city’s legend.

Here are our tips for living in New York City.

Public Transportation is Your Friend

For the most part, the only people who try and drive a car in Manhattan are people who move there. Quickly, you will learn what most New Yorkers already know: public transportation is the best way to get around reliably and affordably. Plenty of New Yorkers carry around a monthly Metro Card, many others use taxi services, and others still use buses. If you live across the water, ferries are also an option to get to Manhattan. Depending on how far you have to travel, using the subways can save time as you avoid the traffic on the streets above. For close destinations, you should consider using a bike, as New York City has excellent bike paths and bike lanes. Oftentimes, these bike lanes separate bikers from moving traffic with parked cars, giving bicyclists who are more inexperienced peace of mind. You can explore the bike paths that wind throughout New York City here.

A Global City

You could make a strong case that New York City is the most global city in the world. People from all over come to the five boroughs and bring their diverse culture and traditions. Exploring New York City is like going all around the world, with plenty of food, music, and fun to discover. When it does come time to explore the rest of the world in earnest, you can easily reach virtually any destination thanks to LaGuardia and JFK Airports. You should also keep in mind that Newark International Airport in neighboring New Jersey is often just as easy to reach.

The City That Never Sleeps

In New York City, you’ll never be bored. Most everyone knows about the major events that take place in the Big Apple, because they are typically high points for most of the world. For example, New Year’s in Time Square, Fashion Week, Restaurant Week, and more. When you live in New York, consider attending some of these events that interest you, but don’t discount the small events that only locals know about. Chances are, almost everywhere you look, whenever you look, you will find something taking place. A celebration, a concert, an art exhibit—you name it, it’s probably happening in New York City at this very moment.
