Texas has experienced a lot of growth over the last few decades, as people from all over the country have flocked to the state. Because of that, many areas of Texas have lost their distinctly “Texan” feel. San Antonio remains an exception, and despite the city growing in size over the years, it still remains a truly Texas city. Our Greystar team has put together a few tips on what it’s like to live in San Antonio for those thinking about moving to the area.

Texas Tradition

San Antonio is one of the most important cities in Texas’ history, and its cultural landmarks attest to this. Most people are aware of the Alamo, a mission that became a turning point in the Texas Revolution, and the call of “Remember the Alamo” inspired the Texas army to win their independence. While many people stop and visit the Alamo, you should also make a point to visit the San Antonio Missions Historical Park. The park encompasses four Spanish colonial missions and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors will be treated to a trip back in time, where they can explore the daily life of missionaries who lived in these well-preserved places in the 1700s. Today, Mexican culture has become an important part of the city, influencing everything from cuisine to shopping and more.

Food City

Throughout the state of Texas, San Antonio is known for its food. Mexican food is among the best in the state, and everyone has a favorite destination. You can grab some tasty chalupas or a satisfying burger at Chris Madrid’s, or dig into a plate of some of San Antonio’s best Mexican food at Mi Tierra.  Even if you are not a fan of spicy, San Antonio proves that Mexican food can please your taste buds without burning them out of your mouth, like Big Lou’s Pizza, which was featured on the Food Network. Beyond Mexican and Tex-Mex, the city offers a number of great restaurants ranging from Americana to Italian and more. Virtually everywhere you go will satisfy your appetite.

Great Outdoors

One of the favorite pastimes for San Antonio residents is to head to the Guadalupe or Comal Rivers and tube. These rivers are about 30 minutes away and offer a great afternoon of relaxation and sun. If you prefer boating and other water sports, Canyon Lake is an excellent boating destination, also about 30 minutes outside of the city. Finally, if you prefer to keep your feet dry, the nearby Texas Hill Country offers up everything from hiking, golfing, and more.
