Whenever people think about the Bay Area, their first thoughts tend to be of San Francisco. Yet more and more frequently, Oakland is becoming a top choice for places to live. Located across the bay from San Francisco, Oakland has grown year after year as more people seek to be near all the excitement of the Bay Area. There are a lot of reasons to live in Oakland, and the Greystar team has put together a few tips on what it’s like to live here.

Plenty of Ways to Get Around

Just like the city across the Bay, Oakland offers an impressive number of public transportation options, giving residents a way to get around with or without a car. BART moves people locally, both within the East Bay and around the greater Bay Area. If the roads are congested, you can always take to the water via a ferry or hop on a bike (yours or bike-share), as Oakland is one of the most bike friendly cities in America. When in doubt, ride-sharing apps like Lyft and Uber are very popular in the Bay Area, as is Zip Car. When you want to get out of the area entirely, the Oakland International Airport can connect you virtually anywhere in the world.

Down to Earth Oakland

One thing that people love about Oakland is the more laid-back pace compared to San Francisco. Much of this is because Oakland has a bit more space. With far fewer people per square mile, Oakland feels a lot less cramped. Oakland residents can also escape to the surrounding areas much easier, like the nearby Redwood National Park. Oakland itself has plenty of parks and green spaces, including the Huckleberry Botanic Regional Preserve, Piedmont Park, and the Joaquin Miller Park.

Diverse Living

As the Bay Area has become increasingly popular, it should be no surprise that the area has grown more and more diverse. Oakland is no exception, and throughout the city, you will encounter pockets of cultures from around the world. This diversity brings with it a deep richness in terms of things to do and experience, especially in regard to cuisine. You can sample a bit of this culture at the various festivals that take place throughout the year, like the Eat Real Festival and Oakland Restaurant Week. You should also explore the spirit of Oakland during the Lunar New Year Bazaar and the Art and Soul Festival.

Up and Coming Oakland

While the entire city is growing year after year, there are some particular hot spots in the city that residents love to explore. Located in the Uptown District, Hive Oakland has something for everyone in a mixed-use space: discover trendy new restaurants and bars, music venues, and more. Another popular destination is Jack London Square, home to even more restaurants and bars. While you sample the latest dish or cocktail, you can enjoy stunning views of the bay.
